How to work it out
- Measure the length and width, and add a separate area for each section.
- Choose a depth from the guide below.
- Check the weight per yard with your supplier. Gravel is usually sold by the ton, so the weight changes what you pay.
- Order a little extra. The calculator starts with 5% to allow for uneven ground and settling.
How deep to go
| Job | Typical depth |
|---|---|
| Decorative border or bed | 2 to 3 in |
| Garden path | 2 to 3 in |
| Patio base | 4 in |
| Driveway, top layer | 2 to 4 in, over a compacted base |
| Driveway, new build in total | 6 to 12 in, more on soft ground |
These are common starting points. Your site, climate and supplier may call for something different.
What one cubic yard covers
| Depth | Area covered |
|---|---|
| 1 in | 324 sq ft |
| 2 in | 162 sq ft |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft |
| 6 in | 54 sq ft |
Why the weight is only an estimate
The calculator starts at 1.35 tons per cubic yard, a figure often quoted for gravel and crushed stone. Commonly quoted figures run from about 1.25 to 1.7, and compacted or wet stone weighs more. If your supplier gives you a number, type it in.
Compaction
Gravel settles and packs down, especially under a driveway. If you are compacting it, add more than the 5% starting allowance, and ask your supplier how much.
Common questions
How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
Multiply length by width to get the area, then choose a depth. A 40 ft by 10 ft driveway topped with 4 inches of gravel needs about 4.9 cubic yards, or roughly 6.7 tons at 1.35 tons per yard, before any allowance for compaction.
How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
Often around 1.35 tons, with common figures from about 1.25 to 1.7 depending on the stone and how wet or compacted it is.
How many bags of gravel make a cubic yard?
With 0.5 cubic foot bags, 54 bags make a cubic yard. For anything much over a cubic yard, bulk delivery is usually easier, so compare both prices.
Does this work for pea gravel and river rock?
Yes. The volume is the same for any stone. Only the weight per yard changes, so type in your supplier's figure.
